Description and Location in Europe
Bilbao is situated on the eastern Atlantic drainage basin of the Iberian Peninsula (latitude: 43º 15’ 42” N, longitude: 2º 55’ 43” W), 19m above sea level. It covers an area of 41.6sq km. The city is connected to the rest of Europe by a solid transport network by road, sea, and air.
Bilbao is the heart of a metropolitan area with over 1,000,000 inhabitants. Since its foundation more than 700 years ago, it has been a socio-economic hub and a driving force in the modernisation of the area of Bizkaia.
Bilbao plays a key role at the regional level in an area stretching from Bordeaux to La Coruña. No other city in the region has so many reasons to be an economic, financial, cultural, and tourism capital.
